More Ice-cube dyeing

Sooo.... I've been wanting to make a jacket with some rayon fabric I bought, but have been hesitant about how to dye the fabric, and whether to dye before or after I made the jacket. I decided to test ice-cube dyeing on a rayon poncho to see how I like the results, and I'm thrilled with how it came out!
Below is a picture of the poncho after I covered it with ice cubes and sprinkled dye powders over it.
And here is the final result... almost looks like I used water colors, doesn't it?
So I have decided to sew the jacket first, then dye... I'll post pictures when I have it done.

Would you please let me know what color blue you used at the top? Everytime anybody from my art group tries to get blue with ice dyeing, we end up with all the blue in the rinse water. Navy works, but not that nice beautiful blue you attained. Thank-you

Diane, the blue I used is Dharma Trading's Turquoise... have you pre-soda soaked the item before you put the ice cubes in and apply the dye powders? Also, I know a lot of people put their fabric on a rack before applying the ice cubes and dye, but I let mine batch in a plastic bin... just some thoughts. Also, you might need to add more dye powder for this method than if you were pre-mixing the dyes. Hope this helps!

Judy, Your poncho turned out beautiful! I sometimes use a rack but usually don't. I've not really seen any difference in the results with either.

I love ice dying but haven't tried it with rayon... thanks for the idea!

I love how it turned out! I am addicted to ice cube dyeing as well. It is so beautiful what it does with the dyes. Did you really put the ice around so sporadically or is that a photo taken after the ice has melted a bit? I usually have my ice bunched up.

Thanks, Lisa. I did have the ice cubes covering the piece, but didn't get a chance to take a picture until the ice had melted quite a bit.
